Reiki 101

What is Reiki?

Reiki is the life force energy that flows through all living things. Reiki energy is loving and healing and is only to the benefit of the recipient’s highest and greatest good.

The practice of Reiki is ancient and originated in Japan. Reiki Practitioners are attuned to the Reiki energy and channel it through their own bodies to distribute healing to other people, places and things.

Why Reiki?

It is believed that a person’s “ki”, or energy, should be strong and free flowing. When this is true, a person’s body and mind is in a positive state of health. When the energy becomes weak, or blocked, it could lead to symptoms of physical or emotional imbalance.

A Reiki session can help ease tension and stress and can help support the body to facilitate an environment for healing on all levels: physical, mental, and emotional. A session is pleasant and relaxing and is often utilized for one’s personal wellness.

What it’s not…

Reiki is not evil, cannot cause harm and is not affiliated with any religion or religious practice. It is not massage, nor is it based on belief or suggestion. It is a subtle and effective form of energy work using spiritually guided life force energy. Reiki is not dependent on one’s intellectual capacity or spiritual development and therefore is available to everyone.

How is Reiki performed?

A Reiki session will begin with a conversation between the Reiki Practitioner and the client. The client will be given an opportunity to discuss any issues or problems they are dealing with, as well as their goals for the session. The Practitioner will customize the session to each client’s needs, and then explain the steps of the session.

The session may be preceded by a guided meditation, energy clearing ritual (such as smudging with sage, ringing a bell, etc.), grounding session, chakra cleanse or any combination of these.

For the session, the client should wear comfortable clothing, (clothing is never removed) and will sit on a chair or lay on a massage table (blankets are also available for the client’s comfort). The Reiki Practitioner will move through specific Reiki hand positions, beginning at the client’s head and moving down the body. The Practitioner’s hands will be placed on the client’s arms, legs, feet and head, or placed above the body depending on the client’s preference. The client may feel warmth or tingling when receiving Reiki. The session will feel relaxing and comfortable. Sometimes, clients will be so relaxed that they may drift off to sleep.

Please Note: Reiki is meant to be used as a complement to traditional care or as a personal relaxation or stress reducing tool. It is not a substitute for qualified medical or traditional care.
